Call for Bursaries: 36th International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences, Boston, 24-28 September 2024

From 24th to 28th September 2024 the International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences will take place in Boston. The Académie internationale d’héraldique (AIH) is pleased to offer two bursaries each amounting to a maximum of 1000 euros to assist early career scholars/professionals with travel, accommodation and registration at the Boston congress. One of these two bursaries will be co-financed by the AIH and the American Heraldry Society. Given other means of financial assistance for the congress, only applicants residing outside of the Unites States of America are eligible for these bursaries.

In addition, the Societas Heraldica Scandinavica offers one bursary in honour of the late Antti Matikkala amounting to a maximum of 1000 euros to assist an early career scholar/professional with travel, accommodation and registration at the Boston congress. This bursary is reserved for a participant outside of the United States of America as well.

Completed applications for early career funding should be made to the President of the AIH no later than 15 November 2023, by email at president@aih-1949.com. For questions regarding the application please contact Dr Steven Thiry at steven.thiry@uantwerpen.be.

Applicants for funding should normally be 1) graduates studying for a higher degree, or recently graduated with a PhD or Master’s degree, whose dissertation is on a heraldic topic, or on a theme closely related to heraldry; 2) early career professionals (heraldic artists, employees/interns of heraldic offices, museum curators, archivists and heritage professionals etc.) with a proven interest in heraldry. Successful applicants for funding must present their work in person at Lund and are expected to attend the whole conference. The eligible costs for the bursary will be reimbursed after the event upon the presentation of all supporting documentation for these expenses.

Proposals for papers need to be submitted in the first instance (and separate from the sponsorship application form and documents) by sending an abstract, CV and contact details to the congress organisation through the website https://www.americanancestors.org/icghs-2024/program#speakers at the latest 15 November 2023. For full details see the Conference website at https://www.americanancestors.org/icghs-2024/program. Submitted proposals should relate to the colloquium theme: ‘Origins, Journeys, Destinations’. Please note that your PowerPoint should be in more than one language if possible since the audience will include people of different nationalities. Papers will be considered for publication in the proceedings after acceptance by the Scientific Committee. The Committee does not need to justify its decisions.
