Im Europa des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit spielte die Legitimation von Herrschaft und der sozialen Stellung durch Herkunft eine zentrale Rolle, sowohl für die Selbstverortung als auch für die Fremdwahrnehmung. Dieser Anspruch beschränkte sich nicht nur auf (dynastische) Herrscher und den Adel, sondern war in besonderem Maße auch bei den städtischen Eliten, vor allem im Patriziat, anzutreffen. Heraldry and History – Why is there so much and at the same time so little heraldry in historical research?

I think everyone dealing with medieval heraldry and heraldic sources is aware of the important mismatch between the number of articles and contributions dealing with medieval heraldry as such and the very poor role coats of arms and heraldic sources have played in the academic historical research so far.

At the centre of this paper is the relationship between heraldry and history, or more precisely, heraldry and historical scholarship.
